Acer Liquid M220 Review: The Cheapest Windows Phone Smartphone. Different sensors perform different quantitative measurements and convert physical indicators into signals that a mobile device can recognize

05.12.2021

At MWC 2015, Acer presented a whole range of new smartphones, but none of these models stuck in my soul as much as the Acer Liquid M220, although the reason for this was not the characteristics: in this regard, the championship certainly belongs to the Liquid Jade Z. The smartphone I noted stands out by taking an unusual course to implement Windows platforms Phone.

All the devices produced by Acer till date ran on different versions of the Android operating system and the fact that the company created its own user interface design was enough. Personally, I have never noticed her moving away from this platform, believing that there is no reason for this.

Although if anything was done in the Liquid M220, then this serves as proof that the step taken by Acer towards the world Windows Phone- nothing more than a small foray, after which she will return to the “wilds” of Android again.

Acer Liquid M220 runs under Windows control Phone 8.1

Acer Liquid M220 has the latest software– last Windows version Phone 8.1, and company representatives confirmed information that over time the smartphone will also receive an updated version of Windows 10 Mobile.

However, the manufacturer decided not to hang everything on one nail, and at the same time released another version, clad in the same hardware and having the same characteristics - but with the Android system. The Windows Phone model will cost around $106, while the Android version will cost you around $15 more.

Even Acer representatives are not very confident that the Liquid M220 with Windows Phone will sell well. And this despite the fact that the price of this model is slightly lower.

The build quality of the Liquid M220 is quite good, especially considering the extremely low cost of the smartphone. The matte texture of the back panel with a silver edge protruding along the edge of the device contributes to a better grip and fits well in the hand.

I really like that the back panel uses a different textured material, but that edge is a little out of place and doesn't really provide much benefit to the user.

Acer Liquid M220 will be sold in 2 versions: with Windows Phone OS and with Android OS

As for the display, then this device equipped with a 4-inch WVGA screen with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and a corresponding density of 233 ppi.

Well, there is nothing inside that deserves much surprise - a dual-core processor with a clock frequency of 1.2 GHz and 512 MB random access memory. Which, however, should be enough to work with applications that tend to slow down.

And all this runs on a weak battery with a capacity of 1300 mAh. However, large energy consumption is not required here, so we can only hope that in everyday use a full charge will last for a long time.

Volume internal memory is limited to 4 gigabytes and this is very problematic, since the operating system takes up about 2.6 GB, which means that only 1.4 GB is left to store downloaded information. With such a small amount of space, storing the apps you like can be a challenge, so increasing the memory to 32 GB using a microSD card is a good way out.

On the back of the device there is a main camera with a viewing angle of 89 degrees. She produces good pictures, but the photographs High Quality You won't do this with this smartphone. On the front, there is also a 2-megapixel selfie camera.

Acer Liquid M220 - our reviews

conclusions

“The Windows Phone operating system has gained great popularity and some buyers will be attracted to this smartphone based on the fact that it is the cheapest model developed on the famous platform.”

  • The cheapest smartphone on Windows Phone
  • Good design

Against

  • Terrible memory
  • Mediocre display

In fact, there are no breathtaking characteristics here - the highlight of the smartphone is that this Acer model is developed on the Windows Phone platform. This is the cheapest Windows Phone device you can find on sale, so if someone really likes this system, then this find (and at such a low price) will undoubtedly be appreciated.

Windows Phone is not as tempting for buyers as the developers would like. It still suffers from a major lack of applications. In this regard, it cannot be compared with either iOS or Android, so it will not be easy for it to cope with the competition.

It's hard to see why the Android version should be preferred over the Windows Phone version, but at least Acer is trying to expand its lineup a bit. And only by sales data will it be possible to judge whether Acer is worth staying in the world of Windows Phone or not.

This model was first shown at MWC 2015, and by mid-June it reached our stores. Over the past couple of years, Acer has begun to produce a significantly larger number of budget phones than before. However, this is not surprising, because before this segment was dominated exclusively by small brands.

Equipment

  • Smartphone
  • Charger
  • PC connection cable (also part of charger)
  • Wired headset

The smartphone comes in a compact, neat box, which, in addition to the usual charger and connection cable, also contains a wired headset, which is rare for budget devices.

Appearance, materials, control elements, assembly

I keep repeating this from review to review: even if the device does not have a unique design, the use of white coloring already sets it apart from most competitors. However, the Z220 still differs from other smartphones not only in color, but also in the shape of the corners. They are only slightly rounded, this makes the design of the smartphone more strict.

The back cover of the device deserves special attention. It is made of plastic with a very interesting texture. It looks and feels very similar to slightly rough fabric or paper. The sensations are quite unusual, but in terms of convenience there are no complaints about the lid. It can be easily removed using the groove at the bottom, and when holding the smartphone in your hand, it does not slip.

Hidden under the cover are slots for two SIM cards (full-size and microSIM), as well as a slot for a microSD memory card; cards up to 32 GB are supported.

The ends of the smartphone are made of matte plastic with a silver edging, stylized as metal.

On top there is a 3.5 mm jack for headphones and microUSB, and on the left there is a volume rocker and a power button. The latter are recessed into the body and protrude only slightly, so finding them in the dark will be problematic. The button travel is short and hard.

Most of the front side is occupied by a four-inch display, above it there is a speaker mesh, a front camera, light and proximity sensors. By the way, the earpiece is also external, which, in my opinion, is a minus.

The Z220 uses on-screen buttons, so you can only see empty space below the display.

The device is perfectly assembled, there are no creaks/plays/gaps.

Dimensions

To tell you the truth, I haven’t tested compact smartphones for quite some time, so I even forgot a little how convenient they can be, and the Liquid Z220 is no exception.

The device is comfortable to hold and type with one hand; it easily fits into almost any pocket. At the same time, I can’t say that I experienced any discomfort due to a small (relatively modern smartphones) diagonals.

Screen

The screen in budget devices is almost always a weak point. The key question here is how much they decide to save on the display.

In the case of the Liquid Z200, they saved on the oleophobic coating and the matrix itself (TN instead of IPS), but the resolution, in my opinion, is quite decent for four inches.

At the right angle, the picture on the display looks quite decent, but the slightest deviation to the side and you are guaranteed an instant color inversion or brightening of the image. However, the image below will speak louder than any words.

In the sun the screen is almost completely blind, and in the dark I want to reduce the brightness a little more.

To summarize: the Liquid Z220's display is suitable for reading information from a smartphone, but don't count on natural color reproduction or maximum viewing angles. After all, this is a budget phone, not a flagship.

operating system

Now let's move on to the advantages of the device, because Liquid Z220 works under Android control 5.0 Lollipop! Not impressed? What if I add to this the almost complete lack of add-ons from Acer themselves? As a result, we get a budget device with one of the latest Android versions, and this is definitely a plus.

Performance

After turning on and setting up the device for the first time, I began flipping through desktops and installing applications from Play Store A. Seeing the heavy slowdowns, I mentally asked: “What kind of chipset does MediaTek have?” As it turns out, it simply uses one of the most budget versions from Qualcomm.

I immediately recommend replacing the built-in launcher with Google Start, and not going to the Play Store if your applications are being updated. Built-in Google Chrome It works generally stable, but slowdowns still occur. Another common disadvantage is long startup applications, you can click on the icon, and the program will open only after 1.5-2 seconds.

In terms of games, you shouldn’t expect any revelations either; only simple “casual” games like Cut The Rope are great.

Autonomous operation

In our tests, the Liquid Z220 did an excellent job in reading mode, but watching HD video drains the device extremely quickly, which is not surprising given such a battery capacity. As for everyday use, the device’s battery will last for one day or less. active use(total screen activity is about one and a half to two hours). Interestingly, using the camera drains your smartphone the fastest.

Camera

The device has two cameras - a main 5 MP with autofocus and a front 2 MP. Among the immediately noticeable advantages, I would like to note the slightly modified camera interface, where finally (unlike most competitors on MediaTek) the quality of video recording is normally indicated. By the way, it is 720 rubles here.

Below is Roman Belykh’s commentary, as well as examples of photographs and videos from the camera:

The quality of photos taken with the Acer Z220 is below average. The main problem is working with exposure: the camera software is constantly trying to either brighten the object or darken it. It is also worth noting that the optics quickly become dirty, so the frames come out a little cloudy. A typical problem with ten-year-old devices. Now manufacturers are somehow coping with this unpleasant feature. But not all. Since the camera often brightens the subject, it often does this by increasing the ISO value - hence a large number of colored digital noise. The video is ordinary, unremarkable HD. The bitrate is apparently variable; it feels like the processor can’t even cope with 6 Mbit/s.

Wireless interfaces

I was pleasantly surprised by the GPS cold start time, but what else would you expect from Qualcomm? This is their absolute advantage relative to MediaTek.

The device supports working with two SIM cards, but there is only one radio module, so when making calls to one SIM card, the second one will not be available. In the settings you can select the main SIM card for calls, SMS and Internet.

Conclusion

The subscribers I called with Liquid Z220 noted good quality voice transmission, but mechanical notes were heard in their own voice, and I would like to increase the maximum volume.

At retail, the Acer Liquid Z220 sells for 5,500-6,000 rubles, depending on the store. For this money you get a compact smartphone with a good design, excellent body materials and running Android 5.0 without manufacturer add-ons. Among the shortcomings, I will highlight the average speed of work and the average time battery life, as well as a very mediocre display with no oleophobic coating.

The key competitor of this model is Asus Zenfone 4, which sells for 6,000 rubles. In my opinion, this device works faster, and an update to 5.0 is already available for it; Asus ZenUI is used as the shell. On the Liquid Z220 side there are more pleasant body materials and appearance; stock Android 5.0 without add-ons can also be a plus for some. In fact, these are models of the same level, so I recommend focusing on those advantages that will be more significant for you.

A new budget Duos from Acer has appeared in stores, which runs on the modern Android 5.0 OS. The company pays a lot of attention to inexpensive models, the cost of which is limited to 6 thousand rubles. Not long ago, another phone was released - the Acer Liquid M220, which looks no different from the Z220, but runs on the Windows Phone 8.1 system. Android, at the same time, is much more stable and better, and the cost. The Z220 is only 10 euros higher on average. That is why the Acer Liquid Z220 was chosen as the subject of this review.

Equipment

The device comes in a manufacturer's cardboard box, devoid of all sorts of frills and design bells and whistles. It only contains a photo and the name of the model. Included with the phone you will find:

- Charger

- USB-microUSB cable

- manual for use

- warranty card

- safety instructions

- plastic headphones

In a word, nothing special. But let’s not forget that the device is classified as a budget model, while flagship gadgets, which cost much more, can boast of impressive equipment.

Appearance and Design

Both the Z220 and the M220 have a slightly rough body. Material: plastic. The four-inch screen is framed by fairly wide bezels, especially at the top and bottom. For better ergonomics, a raised border was added around the entire perimeter of the gadget.

At the top end there is a microUSB connector and a standard 3.5 mm jack for a headset, and at the bottom there is a microphone. The volume control buttons and screen on/off buttons are located on the right edge of the smartphone.

The five-megapixel camera is positioned perfectly in the center back cover, not from the side. There is an LED flash nearby. The front camera is located on the right side of the front panel.

Acer offers a choice of two classic body colors - white and black. To be fair, I would like to note that phones of both colors look great.

Although the design of a budget device cannot be called sophisticated, it does not seem simple either. Surface textures add uniqueness to the gadget, although in this particular case it is a nice bonus.

We were frankly pleased with the build quality. Another bonus is the ribbed surface, which makes it quite difficult to accidentally let go of the device onto the asphalt or hard floor. Thus, the security of Liquid Z220 is at a high level. Minor comments concern the physical buttons: they are too soft and practically do not protrude, so it is very difficult to find them by touch.

Screen

The screen is not the best strong point this smartphone, but objectively speaking, for a budget model it is quite good. The TFT display has a diagonal of only 4 inches, a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, and a density of 223 pixels.

In practice, even a user who does not understand matrices and the structure of screens will immediately notice that the picture is “recessed” under the glass. From this we can conclude that there is an air gap.

One of the main disadvantages of the screen of this model is the poor viewing angle. When you turn it about 15 degrees, there is practically nothing left of the black color. But I was pleasantly surprised by the clarity; for a phone of this class it is excellent. The text is perceived well, without irritating the eyes, so it is quite comfortable to read, the same applies to videos with an abundance of small details.

Sensors may sometimes respond to touch with a slight delay. It is also often necessary to “emphasize” touch buttons or press several times.

As for the screen brightness, it is often not enough, so you have to set it to maximum in the settings, which increases energy consumption, but on a sunny day outside it is still somewhat difficult to read information from the screen. Thus, the only significant advantage of the screen is good clarity; in other respects, unfortunately, it falls short.

Interface

Android 5.0 Lollipop

On top of Android version 5.0 Lollipop, the manufacturer installed minor changes. For example, the user has the opportunity to select the operating mode of the system. There are three of them in total: two tiled and one special. It is very simplified compared to the previous two, and also has large controls, which is great for children and people with visual impairments.

Generally speaking, the system works well, although there are occasional lags. Of the default apps, the best looking ones are the SMS editor and the dialer app. Otherwise we see standard Android with its set of functions.

Camera

Main camera

The Liquid Z220 has two cameras in total: a 5-megapixel main one and a 2-megapixel front one. Let's look at the rear camera first.

There is a flash and autofocus. You can also focus on an object manually; to do this, you need to touch the object on the screen, just like on other smartphones. However, there are certain difficulties here. For example, the camera may take a long time to focus or may not detect the object at all. It follows from this that most of the frames will be ruined, and besides, it is very difficult to quickly film any scene or moving object; you will still have to sacrifice something.

On the other hand, if you shoot static objects and slowly let the camera focus, you will be pleased with the pictures. Another difficulty is related to the location of the camera relative to the edge of the back cover. Especially when shooting in landscape orientation: often your finger partially covers the lens, and you have to constantly monitor this.

The camera app left a good impression. Despite its simplicity, there is a wide range of settings that are still worth understanding to get the best results. No need to judge the camera of this smartphone By automatic mode, since he misses very often. The ISO range is quite wide - from 100 to 1600, plus there are white balance presets for shooting in various conditions - on a sunny day, cloudy weather, at night, and so on. Perhaps, even this one setting is quite often completely enough to get a more pleasant photo than in the “auto” mode.

Aspect ratios can be selected - 4:3 or 16:9. Accordingly, in the first case the resolution will be higher - 5 MP, and in the second it is reduced to 4 MP.

As mentioned above, there are some problems with the physical buttons of the device, so it makes sense to enable the option to shoot by touching the screen, this will make it much easier to get a good image without interference. I must say that even at night you can get good photographs, but for this the object must be well lit.

There is no point in talking much about video shooting. Shooting is provided in two resolutions: HD (720p) and SD (480p). To get the clearest possible image, it is advisable to turn on the stabilizer.

On front camera device, you are unlikely to be able to take a good selfie, since 2 MP is clearly not enough, and the image turns out to be frankly “blurred”. However, communication via Skype is quite comfortable.

Wireless technologies

Such a simple model as the Z220 has only the most necessary set of wireless interfaces, namely:

- Bluetooth 4.0

- GPS navigation

- two slots for SIM cards - micro and mini

Performance

The smartphone runs on a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 chip with a frequency of 1.2 GHz. Graphics accelerator - Adreno 305. For more or less smooth operation There is 1 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of internal memory for storing files.

Acer Liquid M220

The phone is not particularly suitable for Internet surfing. Firstly, it is inconvenient to browse websites on a small screen, and secondly, sensors often respond late, which is quite annoying. Although for social networks it will be quite enough.

Despite the screen sensitivity issue, the touch keyboard is very comfortable. This is another plus for active communication in social networks. If you are a frequent visitor to YouTube, you will have to wait a while to watch videos without stuttering.

How about games? Four cores are not enough for a comfortable game, but if you want to play something, please! The toys start up, what is called “creaking”, but they work quite well.

In addition, it is possible to play not only Angry Birds, but also something more demanding, for example, Asphalt 8 racing. However, some problems come to the surface. For example, the gaming experience can be greatly spoiled by small viewing angles.

Another game that took part in the test was Dead Trigger 2. Of course, it can only be played on minimum settings, but even in this form the image is quite decent, the only catch is that everything is very small. The tests showed the following results:4270 in 3DMark and 14,797 in AnTuTu.

Battery

Looking at the 1300 mAh battery capacity, especially with an eye on others modern models, it's getting funny. But don't forget that this phone is much less demanding than most on the market today.

As practice has shown, such a battery is quite enough for the Acer Liquid Z220, of course, if you let it out of your hands at least sometimes. In the “average use” mode, not only will you not need to periodically go to local cafes with an outlet to “drink coffee,” but when you return home in the evening, about 20% of the charge will remain in reserve.

At the 15% mark, the phone can go into energy saving mode - this is very convenient, especially if you are somewhere on the road. When watching a video, about 20% of the charge per hour is consumed, and when spending leisure time playing 3D games, 100% is enough for 3 hours, no more.

In a word, if you go on the road, we advise you to buy a Power-bank: in this case, you definitely won’t have to worry about your phone dying - you can watch videos, play games, listen to music, but at the same time you won’t be afraid of being left without a connection. the most inopportune moment.

conclusions

So, what can we say in conclusion? The Acer Liquid Z220 is a pretty decent phone, especially considering its price. If you have to choose between the Z220 and its Windows Phone sibling the M220, the Z220 definitely wins. And it's not about appearance(they have the same shells), and in the operating system and performance (the Z220 has twice as much RAM and built-in memory). Of course, the Z220 cannot compete with modern flagships; it is too low-powered, but in its class it is a worthy representative.

Pros:

- attractive design of an inexpensive phone, ergonomic materials

- good screen clarity

- camera app has wide choose settings

- 2 SIM cards

Minuses:

- bad screen overall

- low sensitivity of sensors

- low device performance

- small physical buttons

I liked the quality of the photos, the presence of a flash, gigabyte RAM. The volume is at the level of the interlocutor, you can clearly hear even in the metro. Two SIM cards (I have SIM cards for a megaphone and an MTS, judging by the signal level I see that in many places MTS is just resting) I got used to the screen even at acer z200.

1GB of RAM - Excellent camera. It's easy to find fault. -Video in 720 HD. Films very clearly. -Powerful iron. Even Wot blitz I pulled it from 20 fps. -There are few root applications, which is good

Price! Build quality and tactile sensations from use. Non-slippery, grippy body.

Naked Android 5.0 (only 4-5 applications from the manufacturer that do not interfere with the phone’s operation, a complete absence of add-ons from Acer), for the money this is not bad hardware, it works without any lags or stutters. The appearance and assembly are quite neat. The cameras work), by the way there are 2 of them, the shooting quality is mediocre

Cannot be used as a smartphone. Applications like Yandex maps and Yandex navigator constantly freeze the phone. Either this is the fifth Android or the phone is buggy. The dailyroads video recorder program also freezes. It’s definitely not suitable for car enthusiasts. When shooting video, the camera often focuses blurring the image. The power button is inconveniently located in the middle of the case. When you press the power button, only “Turn off power” pops up. When the phone freezes, you have to turn off the power and then turn it on. In the z200, the menu simply had “reboot”. Only viber and hill climb racing do not freeze. latest update there was such a nuisance (as in someone else’s review): When incoming call information about the incoming may or may not be displayed - to see and respond

It's a freaking sensor. I even wanted to swear. If it's lying on the surface, you have to poke it with all your might to get it to react.
    -Typing is a pain.
    -Personally for me(!) android 5.0
-No, Ruth has rights to him.
-Sound in the handset? No, you didn’t hear it. Even if you attach the speaker to your ear, it will be hard to hear.
-TFT display. Just a little angle and everything is already negative.

    impossible to use!

    2 years ago 0

The price I would give him is 5000 rubles, clumsy updates from Acer (if you put two fingers and remove one, you will see a surprise! Touching is not removed even though we removed the finger) the screen could be made 4.2 inches 0.2 inches would be occupied by on-screen keys, there is no built-in recovery You can’t flash the phone itself through the phone only through FaceBoot mode

    2 years ago 0

The firmware is somewhat damp, there were problems with the desktop and lock screen, more details in the comments.

    2 years ago 0

The main disadvantage is the display and battery!
The display sometimes does not respond correctly to typing on the keyboard, the viewing angles are terrible, the brightness is very weak (generally a cheap TFT).
The battery is from the 90s, I remember they installed these on Nokia, the charge melts VERY quickly, fortunately it is removable...

As expected, Acer has decided to return to the Windows Phone-based smartphone market. The Taiwanese company was at one time one of the first to produce devices with operating system Windows Phone 7. But since the announcement of Acer Allegro, a lot of water has passed under the bridge, and the company has not dared to try its hand in this sector again. Now, on the eve of the launch of the Windows 10 platform at MWC 2015 in Barcelona, Acer has finally presented its new smartphone with Microsoft mobile OS - Acer Liquid M220.

“Now is the right time for Acerto join the Windows ecosystemPhone, whose popularity is growing, including due to the convergence between smartphones and PCs,”— said the president of the Acer smartphone division, Esty Liew (ST Liew). The device runs Windows Phone 8.1, but Acer guarantees an upgrade to Windows 10. A plus is full compatibility with Microsoft applications and services like OneDrive, Skype, Office and Cortana.

This, however, is not about flagship smartphone: Acer is focusing on simplicity and accessibility of the device. For example, the company uses a modest 4-inch display with WVGA resolution (233 dots per inch). The device is equipped with two cameras: a 5-megapixel rear camera with autofocus and a 2-megapixel wide-angle front camera for self-portraits and video calls.

Liquid Leap and Liquid Leap+ smartwatches are fully compatible with Windows Phone 8.1, so they can be used by Liquid M220 owners for fitness, music control and quick notifications. Acer also sells accessories separately for the Liquid M220, such as multi-colored protective cases or cases with a flip cover.

The design of the smartphone is optimized for one-handed operation. Texture back side resembles the structure of Thai silk, and the silver edging with a pyramid pattern allows you to better hold the device in your hand. The volume control and device power buttons are located on the side and are easy to feel. Sales of Liquid M220 in black and white colors are promised in April at a recommended price of 80 euros on the EU market.

Acer does not provide detailed information in the press release specifications Liquid M220, but apparently the company decided to play it safe and released, along with the device based on Windows Phone 8.1, a version of the same device, but based on the platform Google Android 5.0 Lollipop - Liquid Z220. More details are being reported about it.

The Z220 is also equipped with a 4-inch screen with a resolution of 800 × 480, two 5-megapixel and 2-megapixel cameras and is housed in exactly the same body. At the same time, as Acer notes, the device is equipped with a dual-core Snapdragon 200 @ 1.2 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of built-in flash memory (there is support microSD cards). The smartphone supports dual SIM cards. The recommended price of the device on the European market is the same - 90 euros, but it will be released a little earlier, this month.

At the same time, the Taiwanese company announced the Z520 model, which, in addition to a larger screen, can offer the function of shooting a self-portrait using voice command, 8-megapixel rear camera with autofocus and LED flash, 4-core processor and DTS Studio Sound stereo sound. The smartphone is equipped with hardware control buttons and is available in both black and white colors.

Features of the device include profiles that make it easier for beginners to work with the device: basic (only voice calls and text messages), simple (there is also access to quick messages, radio, weather, clock and quick call to contacts) and advanced (normal Android smartphone mode). The Acer Liquid Z520 is promised to launch in Europe in April at a price of 110 euros.
