In 1937, on the 4th floor of the Central Telephone Exchange (CTS) there were 24 desks for help desk operators. A year later, 40 tables were already installed in the new hall on the 2nd floor. By 1940, 11 million certificates were issued to MGTS subscribers. At the beginning of 1941, there were 114 telephone operators on staff, and the directories of network subscribers were prepared for publication by the editorial team. Service 09 appeared without a permanent number. To obtain information, subscribers asked the telephone operator to connect them to the Help Desk. At the Central Telephone Exchange in Milyutinsky Lane. 5 (later Markhlevskogo St., 5) special telephone operators gave answers about telephone numbers and rules for the provision of MGTS services. In 1932, with the advent of automatic telephone exchanges, The information office received the number 09.

In 1948, the service finally became Reference and Information Service 09. There was an acute shortage of premises for its placement. After the war, the increase in inquiries of a reference nature was about 2 million per year. Of course, an increase in the number of jobs was required.

In 1960, Service 09 moved from the TsTS building to the street. Markhlevskogo, no. 5 to the building of automatic telephone exchange K7 on Petrovsky Boulevard, no. 5 and is being re-installed. There are 101 desks “A” for issuing information on the telephone numbers of institutions and organizations, the card index of which amounted to 55 thousand items, and 11 desks “B” for information about apartment telephones, containing about 450 thousand subscribers.

Of the total number of requests in the 60s, 90% were for desks “A”. In 1965, Information and Information Service 09 was reorganized into an independent Reference and information node (RIU), which was headed by B.F. Yudkina.

In 1991, in parallel with service 09, paid reference and information services were organized:

  • “Medservice” 05-0 – information about the availability of medicines and medical services.

In December 2004, MGTS united all paid services: 05-0, 05-3 and 05-9, into a single number 009. Subscribers received a unique help desk: using one phone number you can not only get contact information about the desired organization, and , in any city in Russia, but also receive private services, for example, order medicine, call a taxi, book tickets, find out train schedules and much more.
