There is no sound in all windows 7 browsers. Why is there no sound on the Internet? What to do? Driver problems

05.11.2021

When the sound does not work in the browser, it becomes impossible to watch videos, listen to audio recordings, or fully communicate via Skype. Sometimes this trouble - complete silence on the Internet - happens completely unexpectedly and the sound disappears completely. But more often, only some programs become mute, or the sound remains, but audibility becomes poor. What steps to take and what to do if there is no sound on the Internet?

What to check first?

  • Look in the tray to see if the speaker icon is muted. If it is crossed out, you need to uncheck the box and raise the slider to the desired level. Check that the speaker plug is firmly inserted into the socket.
  • The speakers may be muted. Turn the knob clockwise. The LED on the speaker should be on for almost any model.
  • Check the sound settings in the program you are currently using. For example, the sound in Skype may be turned off.
  • Restart your computer. Sometimes the sound appears when the operating system is restarted.

Features of settings for browsers

If everything is connected, but there is still no sound on the Internet, try the following steps.

Sound drivers

If the simple techniques listed above did not help, it’s time to solve the problem globally. Often sound does not work on the Internet due to problems with software- drivers that are responsible for audio.

To reinstall drivers for audio devices, you need to download the latest driver from the website of your sound card manufacturer and run its installation. Another possible way of doing things is:

  1. Go to “My Computer” and right-click on the white field from the list that appears, select the last item - “Properties”.
  2. In the control panel (on the left) you need to select “Device Manager”.
  3. The next step is “Sound, video, audio devices”.

If you are afraid that something will go wrong after reinstalling, create a restore point on the system. To do this, follow the route “Control Panel”, “System”, “System Protection”, “Create...”. You just need to give the point a name, and the date and time will be set automatically.

In most cases, reinstalling drivers solves all problems with sound. Don't forget to restart your computer after installation. The driver update process is shown in more detail in the video:

If there is sound, but it doesn’t work well

When watching videos on the Internet, the sound is most often interrupted due to low speed. If you have a high-speed connection, the speed may drop for several reasons.

  • Incorrect modem or router settings.
  • Low quality equipment.
  • Opening too many browser tabs.
  • Using a wireless connection (wi-fi) that is not password protected.
  • The computer got sick, caught a virus, a Trojan.
  • Browser cache is full.
  • Microwave devices (microwave ovens) and radios that are turned on also reduce Internet speed.
  • Problems with the provider when he repairs or reinstalls equipment.

There is also another possible reason for the appearance of a bad, hoarse, intermittent sound. You may have accidentally made changes to your audio settings. View all speaker settings in the tray (you need to open the “Options” tab). Noise is generated if the “microphone” checkbox is checked (even in cases where the microphone is not actually connected to the computer). Effects may also be accidentally included (sound through a pipe, organ hall, etc.).

Many users quite often have difficulties with sound reproduction when visiting certain Internet pages. But why doesn't the sound play in the browser? What to do in this situation? Let's take a closer look at the possible causes of this problem and what to do about them.

Why does the sound disappear

A trivial, but extremely common reason for the lack of sound in the browser is associated with the volume being completely turned off or significantly reduced. In this case it is necessary:

Often users do not pay any attention to this and begin to panic. In fact, everything is incredibly simple.

If before you started using the browser, everything was fine with the sound on the computer, then the above reasons are not relevant. Why doesn't sound work in the browser in this case? There can be an incredible number of options.

First of all, you should pay attention to the applications that are currently running. Some programs use sound in somewhat specific ways. Their settings can take precedence and prevent other applications from interacting with drivers.

For example, on Windows 7 this situation occurs with the FL Studio music sequencer. Its settings have a special mode called Auto Close Device. If this function is not activated, then when minimized the utility uses the sound device and drivers as a priority. That is, nothing will be reproduced in any other program. This also applies to any media players.

Drivers

If there is no sound in the browser, then the problem may be incorrect or outdated drivers. In this case, you need to reinstall or simply update the drivers:

Before updating or removing drivers, pay attention to the “Disable/Enable” button. If you have the second option, it means that the drivers are disabled and you just need to enable them. If the system says that the device is completely disabled, then you should try to turn it on through the BIOS, but such situations are extremely rare.

Interrupted and distorted

What if it's just bad sound that constantly cuts out and slows down? There may be several options:

To explain it in accessible language, sound jumps as interrupts are caused due to excessive load on the processor and RAM.

Plugin settings

Let's look at another one possible reason, why the sound on the Internet does not work, from the point of view of installed plugins. Perhaps the problem lies with these add-ons ( Shockwave Flash or Adobe Flash Player).

The first step is to check if it is compatible Current version flash player with browser. Update the utility to current version, or completely remove it and install a new one. In most cases, this helps resolve the problem.

A similar situation can arise with any plugins that use sound system when integrated into the browser. Below we will analyze similar situations for all popular browsers using the example of certain programs.

Google Chrome

Often the problem Google Chrome lies in the Shockwave Flash plugin. To find out the cause of the problem and correct the current situation, you need to:

If after this, music playback was restored, then this was precisely the problem.

Please note that the Shockwave Flash plugin is native to Chrome. If you additionally download Adobe Flash Player, a conflict may arise between them. That is, if you installed both programs and after that it disappeared in Google Chrome, then now you know what the reason is. In this case, they should be used alternately.

Opera

Quite often problems arise in Opera, and given the fact that this is the most specific browser in terms of settings, there is nothing to be surprised about.

First of all, you should clear the cache:

  1. Go to the “Tools” menu;
  2. Select the option “Delete personal data”;
  3. Click “Clear cache”;
  4. Also check the settings in Opera itself:
  5. Go to “Tools” again;
  6. Go to the “General settings/Advanced” section;
  7. Check if the “Enable sounds” option is checked;

If the music plays, but periodically disappears and slows down, then try reinstalling or updating the plugins, as described above.

*In new versions of Opera, everything is already included by default.

Mozilla Firefox

Now it's time to figure out what to do if there is no sound in Firefox. Before reinstalling add-ons, try disabling the plugins one by one. If this does not solve the problem, you need to:

  1. Go to “Settings/Privacy”;
  2. Check the menu;

The program uses a history storage option, where existing exceptions are indicated. It is likely that a site that has audio problems is on this list.

Yandex browser

As for Yandex, the previously described methods are suitable for it, but there are still pitfalls. The reason that there is no sound when watching a video or listening to music on the Internet, for example on YouTube, may be that it is turned off in the tabs.

To check, you need to go to the extensions menu and see what options are installed:

  • “Mute all tabs”;
  • Or “Enable on all tabs”;

It is clear here that if option number two is displayed to you, then audio playback is simply disabled.

Settings in DirectX

We examined the most common options for distortion and loss of sound in Internet browsers. If none of the above helped to enable sound on the Internet on a computer or laptop, then you should try testing the sound card:

If the test is successful and you hear sounds while it is running, then the reason is the browser and not the sound card. In this case, reinstall it and enjoy your favorite music or video again.

Even if you use another browser, for example Amigo, Internet Explorer or Safari, you can safely take these instructions as a basis, since they are all practically the same in terms of settings.

If this does not help, and it still does not appear, then there is nothing left to do but test the sound card physically or completely replace it due to a malfunction.

Good day.

This article is based on personal experience, is a kind of collection of reasons why the computer may lose sound. Most of the reasons, by the way, can be easily eliminated yourself! To begin with, it should be distinguished that the sound may disappear for software and hardware reasons. For example, you can check the functionality of the speakers on another computer or audio/video equipment. If they are working and there is sound, then most likely there are questions about the software part of the computer (more on that in more detail).

So, let's get started...

6 reasons why there is no sound

1. Non-working speakers (cords often bend and break)

This is the first thing you need to do when setting up sound and speakers on your computer! And sometimes, you know, there are such incidents: you come to help a person solve a problem with sound, but it turns out he forgot about the wires...

In addition, you may have connected them to the wrong input. The point is that on sound card The computer has several outputs: for a microphone, for speakers (headphones). Typically, the microphone output is pink, and the speaker output is green. Pay attention to this! Also, here is a short article about, where this issue was discussed in more detail.

Rice. 1. Cord for connecting speakers.

Sometimes it happens that the inputs are very worn, and they just need to be slightly adjusted: taken out and reinserted. You can also clean your computer from dust at the same time.
Also pay attention to whether the speakers themselves are turned on. On the front of many devices you will notice a small LED that signals that the speakers are connected to the computer.

Rice. 2. These speakers are turned on because the green LED on the device is on.

By the way, if you turn up the volume in the speakers to maximum, you can hear a characteristic “hissing”. Pay attention to all this. Despite its simplicity, in most cases problems arise precisely with this...

2. Sound is turned down in settings

The second thing you need to do is check if everything is in order with the computer settings; perhaps in Windows the sound is programmatically turned down to minimum or disabled in the sound devices control panel. Perhaps, if it is simply turned down to minimum, there is sound - it plays very weakly and you simply cannot hear it.

Let's show the setup using Windows 10 as an example (in Windows 7, 8 everything will be similar).

1) Open control Panel, then go to the section “ equipment and sounds«.

3) In your “sound” tab, audio devices (including speakers, headphones) connected to the computer should be displayed. Select the desired speakers and click on their properties (see Fig. 4).

4) In the first tab that will open in front of you (“general”) you need to look carefully at two things:

  • - has the device been detected?, if not, you need drivers for it. If they are not there, use one of the utilities for, the utility will also recommend where to download the necessary driver;
  • - look at the bottom of the window to see if the device is turned on. If not, be sure to turn it on.

5) Without closing the window, go to the “levels” masonry. Look at the volume level, it should be more than 80-90%. At least until you have sound, and then you can adjust (see Fig. 6).

Rice. 6. Volume levels

6) In the “Advanced” tab there is a special button for checking the sound - when you press it, a short melody should play (5-6 seconds). If you don't hear it, go to the next step, saving the settings.

Rice. 7. Sound check

7) By the way, you can go to “ control panel/hardware and sounds" and open " volume settings", as shown in Fig. 8.

Here we are interested in whether the sound is turned down to minimum. By the way, in this tab you can even turn down the sound certain type, for example, all that is heard in Firefox browser.

8) And lastly.

In the lower right corner (next to the clock) there are also volume settings. Check whether the volume level is normal and whether the speaker is turned off, as in the picture below. If everything is fine, you can move on to step 3.

Rice. 10. Adjusting the volume on the computer.

Important! Besides Windows settings, be sure to pay attention to the volume of the speakers themselves. Perhaps the regulator is set to minimum!

3. There is no driver for the sound card

Most often, problems arise on the computer with drivers for video and sound cards... That is why the third step to restore sound is to check the drivers. You may have already identified this problem in the previous step...

To determine if everything is okay with them, go to device Manager. To do this, open control Panel, then open the tab “ Equipment and sound" and then run device Manager. This is the most quick way(see Fig. 11).

In Device Manager we are interested in the “ Sound, gaming and video devices". If you have a sound card and it is connected: it should be displayed here.

1) If the device is displayed and there is a yellow (or red) exclamation mark next to it, it means the driver is not working correctly or is not installed at all. In this case, you need to download the required driver version. By the way, I like using the program - it will show not only the device model of your card, but also tell you where to download the necessary drivers for it.

A great way to update and check drivers is to use utilities to auto-update and search for drivers for any hardware on your PC:. Highly recommend!

2) If there is a sound card, but Windows does not see it... Anything can happen here. It is possible that the device is not working properly, or you have not connected it properly. I recommend that you first clean your computer from dust and blow out the slot if you do not have a built-in sound card. In general, in this case, the problem is most likely with the computer’s hardware (or that the device is turned off in the BIOS; see Bos a little lower in the article).

Rice. 12. Device Manager

It also makes sense to update your drivers or install drivers of a different version: older or newer. It often happens that developers are not able to provide for all possible computer configurations, and it is possible that some drivers on your system conflict with each other.

4. No codecs for audio/video

If when you turn on the computer you have sound (you can hear, for example, the Windows greeting), and when you turn on some video (AVI, MP4, Divx, WMV, etc.) - the problem is either in the video player, or in the codecs, or in the file itself (it may be corrupted, try opening another video file).

1) If the problem is with the video player, I recommend that you install another one and try. For example, the player gives excellent results. It already has built-in codecs optimized for its operation, so it can open most video files.

2) If the problem is with codecs, I advise you to do two things. The first thing is to remove your old codecs from the system completely.

And second, install full set codecs - K-Lite Codec Pack. Firstly, this package has an excellent and fast Media Player, and secondly, all the most popular codecs will be installed, which open all the most popular video and audio formats.

Article about K-Lite Codec Pack codecs and their correct installation:

By the way, it is important not only to install them, but to install them correctly, i.e. full set. To do this, download the full set and during installation select the “Lots of Stuff” mode (more about this in the article about codecs - the link is just above).

Rice. 13. Setting up codecs

5. Incorrectly configured BIOS

If you have a built-in sound card, check your BIOS settings. If the sound device is turned off in the settings, then you are unlikely to be able to get it to work in Windows. I'll be honest, usually this problem It is rare because By default in the BIOS settings the sound card is enabled.

To access these settings, press the F2 or Del button (depending on your PC) when you turn on the computer. If you can’t enter, try taking a closer look at the computer’s boot screen as soon as you turn it on. Usually there is always a button on it to enter the Bios.

For example, an ACER computer turns on - the DEL button is written at the bottom - to enter the Bios (see Fig. 14).

Rice. 14. Bios entry button

In Bios you need to look for a line containing the word " Integrated«.

Rice. 15. Integrated Peripherals

In the list you need to find your audio device and see if it is turned on. In Figure 16 (below) it is turned on; if you see “Disabled” opposite you, change it to “Enabled" or “Auto".

Rice. 16. Turn on AC97 Audio

After this, you can exit the BIOS and save the settings.

6. Viruses and adware

Where are we without viruses... Moreover, there are so many of them that it is unknown what they can present.

First, pay attention to the operation of the computer as a whole. If frequent antivirus activations occur, the “brakes” are out of the blue. Perhaps you actually became infected with a virus, and more than one.

The best option would be to check your computer for viruses with some modern antivirus with updated databases. In one of the articles earlier, I cited the best at the beginning of 2016:

By the way, antivirus shows good results; you don’t even need to install it. Just download and check.

Secondly, I recommend checking your computer using a flash drive (the so-called Live CD). For those who have never encountered it, I’ll say: it’s like you’re loading a ready-made product from a CD (flash drive) operating system, which has an antivirus. By the way, you may get sound in it. If so, then most likely you have problems with Windows and may have to...

7. Restoring sound if all else fails

Here I will give some tips that may help you.

1) If you used to have sound, but now you don’t, you may have installed some programs or drivers that caused a hardware conflict. It makes sense to try this option.

2) If you have another sound card or other speakers, try connecting them to the computer and reinstalling the drivers for them (while removing from the system the drivers for the old devices that you disabled).

3) If all the previous points did not help, you can take the risk. Next, immediately install the sound drivers and if suddenly sound appears, watch it carefully after each installed program. Most likely, you will immediately notice the culprit: a driver or program that previously conflicted...

4) Alternatively, connect headphones instead of speakers (speakers instead of headphones). It might be worth contacting a specialist...

Probably, many Internet surfers sometimes notice that when visiting a particular resource, problems may arise with sound playback. Why does the sound disappear in the browser? How to deal with this? Now we will try to find answers to these questions. Personal solutions will be given for the most famous browsers.

There is no sound in the browser. Why?

So, let's start looking for the reason for the sound disappearing or turning off in Internet browsers (without interfering with the software for now). As trivial as it sounds, the occurrence of such a situation may be due to the fact that either on the computer terminal or on the active speakers operating from the mains, the volume is simply reduced or completely turned off.

What to do? Yes, just check the volume level in the system by clicking on the icon in the system tray, make sure the speakers are working, and whether power is connected to them. Often many people do not pay attention to this, but in vain. But this is the simplest situation. Further it will be somewhat more difficult.

What to do if there is no sound in the browser?

Sometimes it happens that until a certain moment everything worked as expected (meaning without using a browser), and suddenly there is silence. Why in the browser at startup? There can be a lot of reasons.

Here it is worth paying attention to the currently running applications. They can also use sound, but in a somewhat specific way. It happens that their settings take priority and prevent access to the sound drivers of any other applications.

This can be explained using the example of the FL Studio music sequencer. For example, in the audio settings there is a special Auto Close Device mode. If this function is deactivated, when minimized, the program will prioritize the use of the sound device and its drivers, which means that there will be no sound in any other application (be it a media player or the same browser). By the way, the same applies to “dialers” like Skype. Mail.Ru Agent, ICQ, QIP, etc.

Driver problems

Sometimes other situations occur. For example, the sound disappeared in the Yandex browser or in any other. The problem may be that the device is currently disabled, the system has incorrect or outdated versions drivers.

In this case, you should update or reinstall the drivers for the sound card or additional virtual devices present on the computer system. This can be done in the standard way from the “Control Panel” in the “Device Manager”, using the properties bar and the “Driver” tab to access functions, where there are several buttons, one of which allows you to update the driver, and the second allows you to remove and then install him again. There is also a “Disable” button.

It may very well be that it just looks like the “Enable” button if the use of the driver is currently disabled. You can also roll back the driver, as shown in the example, if everything was working fine before the sound disappeared. If the system reports that the device is completely disabled, you can try to enable it in the BIOS, but, as a rule, such situations are extremely rare.

If there is sound, but it is distorted, interrupted or disappears

Now we can consider the question of why the sound disappears in the browser, constantly interrupting. Apparently, on weak machines this may be due, firstly, to a large number of open applications that somehow access the sound system, and secondly, to the fact that in the browser itself there are a lot of tabs open that it does not manages to process on time in terms of fully loading the content. So to speak, slowing down the system with increased access to the hard drive loads the processor and RAM and causes sound jumps in the form of interruptions.

Features of plugin settings

Let us now consider the problem of why the sound in the browser disappeared, from the point of view of plug-ins. As a rule, the most basic ones are add-ons like Adobe Flash Player or Shockwave Flash. It may very well be that the problem lies with them.

There are several ways to do this. First, try to check the compatibility of the flash player version with the browser itself, update it to latest version through the built-in update system, or completely uninstall it in the standard way, download the latest version and install it again. In many cases this can help. The same situation can be observed with other plugins that, when integrated into the browser, can use the sound system. Now let's look at such situations for each specific browser using the example of several of the most popular programs.

Fixing a problem in Google Chrome

As a rule, the problem with Chrome in many cases is Shockwave Flash. To correct the situation or find out the reasons for the sound being turned off, you need to do the following.

Enter chrome://plugins and click the “More details” hyperlink in the upper right corner. Here you need to find the item pointing to the dynamic library pepflashplayer.dll and disable its use. If the sound appears, then the problem is in this plugin.

Here it is worth paying attention to the fact that Shockwave Flash is present in the browser initially. If Adobe Flash Player is also installed, unexpected conflicts may occur between the two add-ons. Here you need to either turn them off one by one, or use one or the other.

Fixing a problem in Opera

Let's see what can be done if the sound is lost in the Opera browser. Opera is a fairly specific browser in terms of settings.

First of all, you need to thoroughly clear the cache using the tools menu with the “Delete personal data” command, and be sure to select clear cache from the list. It is also worth checking the basic sound settings, again from the “Tools” menu, successively moving to the “General Settings” / “Advanced” sections. There should be a checkmark next to the “Enable sounds” line.

If there is a situation where the sound disappears again and again, you can try updating or reinstalling the plugins in the Opera browser, as was described a little earlier.

Fixing a problem in Firefox

Now let's figure out what to do if there is no sound in the Firefox browser. Naturally, here you can do the same as before, in terms of reinstalling built-in players.

But first you need to use one by one disabling absolutely all installed plugins. If this does not help, you need to go to the “Privacy” section located in the “Settings” menu and check the “Firefox” drop-down menu. The program will use your history storage settings, which specify exceptions. It is quite possible that the site you are currently on is on this list. Just remove it from the list.

Fixing a problem in Yandex browser

For the case when the sound is lost in the Yandex browser, standard methods are suitable, but there are also pitfalls here.

The main problem with sound loss may be muting the sound on the tabs. Here you need to go to the extensions menu and look at the state of one of the lines. There may be two options here: “Mute sound on all tabs” and “Unmute sound on all tabs”. It is clear that if the second option is displayed in the setting itself, then the use of sound by the browser is simply disabled.

What to do if nothing helps?

In principle, we have examined the most common situations associated with distortion, partial or complete loss of sound in the most popular Internet browsers. If the above methods for fixing the problem do not help, you should take drastic measures, say, testing the sound card.

This can be done from the DirectX dialog box, called up through the “Run” menu with the dxdiag command. There is a special test button on the installed audio equipment tab. If it is completed successfully (and the user will hear sounds during its passage), then the problem is not in the sound card, but in the browser. In extreme cases, you will have to reinstall it again. If someone is afraid of losing saved data, after reinstallation you can use the import of bookmarks or “Favorites” information (of course, if the option to save personal data was set during the uninstallation process).

If this does not help, you will have to physically test the sound card or replace it due to complete failure. In general, there can be many reasons for sound loss, for example, improper operation of the website, the influence of extraneous electrical equipment on the computer, power surges, etc.

Hi all! There is a situation when there is sound on the computer, but there is no sound in the browser. So today I will give you advice on the problem " no sound in browser" The tips will be useful for all browsers.

  • Before following the steps below, check the sound from your speakers and the computer itself. The sound may be muted (the “mute sound” checkbox is checked or the volume is reduced to zero. Or there is a problem with the speakers.

  • Then try reinstalling the browser itself. If after checking there is still no sound in the browser, then read on.

There is no sound in the browser, no sound? What to do in this situation?

Clearing cache. Try clearing your browser cache. Each browser does this differently, but the principle is the same. If you don’t know how to do this, just enter “ how to clear cache» for a specific browser and find the answer. I’ll show you using Google Chrome as an example:

Menu -> Settings -> Scroll to the bottom and click " Show additional settings" -> Click " Clear the history" -> Leave the checkbox only on " Clear cache" And " Cookies" and don't forget to select " During all this time" -> And click " Clear the history«

  • After that, restart the browser and try to play the sound, maybe this will help solve why the sound disappeared in the browser.

Disabling Flash module . If the first tip did not help and there is still no sound in the browser, then try disabling the Flash module.

Each browser also does this differently. I will show you using the Google Chrome browser as an example, and you will do the same only for your browser.

  • Type in the Chrome address bar: chrome://plugins/

  • Then click “More details”. Then you need to disable Flash. In the Flash table (list), in most cases, there are three pieces.

  • Disable the flash with the name “Shockwave Flash”, in the location of which there is a file pepflashplayer.dll, click “Disable”. Restart the browser and try to start the sound.

Extension. If the above tips did not help and there is still no sound in the browser. The sound may have disappeared due to expansion.

  • Go to the extension panel of your browser and by clicking on the extension icon there is a checkmark “ Mute all tabs" The sound may be muted in the extension. Switch to " Unmute sound on all tabs».
  • Reinstalling Flash Player. If there is still no sound in the browser. Then you need to reinstall Flash Player. To do this you need to delete the old one.

    • Come to Control Panel, then go to Uninstalling programs

    • Select Flash Player or also called Flash Player Plugin and click “Delete”.

    • After that, go to the site: http://get.adobe.com/ru/flashplayer/otherversions/, download the new Flash Player and install.

    • After installation, restart your computer and try playing sound in your browser.

    These are all the solutions I know to the question " Why is there no sound in the browser?" If anyone knows other ways to solve " Why is there no sound in the browser?", then write in the comments, I will be very grateful.
