The sound on the Windows 10 laptop has stopped working. Heavy load on the processor or other hardware components

09.12.2023

Much more often the video card driver goes wrong. And then the system writes that it has been restored. If there is no sound in Windows 10, the user is most likely to blame. Very often in programs such as Skype, someone turns off the microphone and speakers, turns off the application and forgets about it. And then they wonder why the sound stopped working. The check is carried out in completely standard ways.

The first thing to check is the volume. The next logical step is to check the power supply of the speakers and the quality of the connection to the analog output connector. Finally, you should turn on the control on the speakers themselves. If all of the above does not help, look at the driver version when installed. Sometimes there is no sound in games after an update.

Step-by-step instruction

Errors are so typical that they can already be classified into groups. This is exactly what we are going to do.

Volume

For most of the population, the I/O ports are located on the rear wall of the system unit, facing away from the user. Therefore, the first step is to click on the tray to see if there is an icon like the one in the screenshot.

In 95% of cases, this completes system recovery.

The cable is not connected to the connector

Another thing happens - someone turned off the speakers so as not to interfere. In this case, the keyword “speakers” will be missing.

Additional verification needed! Right click on the speaker icon and go to playback devices.

Instantly everything becomes clear: not connected!

Fix this problem by inserting a “jack” into the green audio output connector on the motherboard. The screenshot shows only 3 ports; in modern models they will form the bottom row of the two available.

Pink microphone input. Please pay attention to this if the headset has two “jacks”. After this, make sure using the method described above that the speakers are connected.

Driver

A sign that you need to install the required driver will be the absence of any active system devices in the menu.

An empty list is a clear indication that the disk with firewood was included with the motherboard for a reason. The necessary software must be installed. Typically, changes take effect without a reboot. If sound devices are not installed, first check the task manager. Most likely the driver is missing. If the sound does not work after updating Windows 10, work in the same direction. The drivers turned out to be too old.

Device is disabled

From time to time, sound does not work on Windows 10 due to the fact that someone turned off the device completely. This can be done in two ways:

  1. Program intervention.
  2. Manually.

The authors cannot prove this in any way, but it seems that devices may disappear due to the installation of crooked drivers. This happens from time to time with USB. At the beginning of December, when I removed any device and installed a new one, the system did not see it. The authors had to turn off the power because the PC became uncontrollable, deprived of a keyboard and mouse. One reason that there is no sound in the headphones is usually more prosaic. Let's go back to Sound and look.

Everything is seen. It says in black and white that the speakers are disabled. To restore sound, right-click and select the desired option.

Just in case, always select the checkboxes shown in the screenshot, this sometimes saves a lot of time.

Sound level

You can set the sound level not only on the speakers, but also on the system mixer. If there is no sound after installing Windows 10, don’t rush to blame Billy Gates and Microsoft. Check the sound level of all devices thoroughly.

Each object has this tab. Don't waste any decibels.

In Game

If the game world does not want to play, the answer to the question of why there is no sound lies somewhere in the settings area of the application itself. There are simply no options here. This is not some emulator that has incompatibility issues. All releases are tested on a Windows 10 computer. This is part of the marketing strategy. Some games, if completed incorrectly, will disrupt the operating system settings. You'll have to install everything manually.

We know for sure that fresh firewood immediately ends up on the Microsoft server list, but we recommend updating from the official hardware manufacturer. Windows has too many system devices to get confused among. Before you update your software, find out:

  • Motherboard model.
  • Sound card model (if available).

Just in case, we show how to do the same through Device Manager (although we do not recommend using it).

Everything in the Sound... folder needs to be updated. Perhaps the turned on fancy display is not perceived correctly by the system. In this case, the Dispatcher will contain question marks. This is a clear indication that you need to visit the manufacturer’s official website. Some displays support audio and we are updating the driver for this.

Here I want to talk about a simple way to fix sound problems on Windows 10. This method is simple and can be suitable in any situation, follow all the steps very carefully so that there are no questions later. The problem often occurs when upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, or due to a failed driver update. I had this happen, and I corrected the situation using the method described in this article, but it’s not a fact that it will help you too.

If the sound does not work on Windows 10

Stage 1:

Launch the device manager. To do this, you must right-click on the Start menu and find it there. It can also be done this way: press the Win+R keys and enter the command devmgmt.msc .

Stage 2:

Find the tab in Device Manager "Sound, gaming and video devices". The sound drivers are there.

Stage 3:

Right-click on the sound device and select "Update driver".

Stage 4:

Click on the section "Searching for drivers on this computer".

Stage 5:

We find ourselves in a window where we need to click on the option “Select a driver from the list of already installed ones”.

Stage 6:

Find the latest version of the sound driver and click on the button "Further".

You will see a window indicating a successful driver update.

Let's go back to step 4. Here you can choose to automatically search for drivers via the Internet. Then a message may appear indicating that the latest driver version is installed. If you click “Search for drivers on this computer” again and then select the path to the driver file, this may well solve the problem.

Alternatively, you can uninstall the sound driver, then restart your computer or laptop, after which it will be automatically reinstalled.

  • I advise you to read about the causes of sound problems:
  • About sound cards:

In short, if there is no sound on your Windows 10 computer, this method may help, but not always. Then I’ll write a couple more articles on fixing errors with sound. Also offer your solutions and talk about any errors you encounter, and I will try to solve them.

The sound on your computer may disappear not only after the next update to Windows 10, but also for any other reason. Sometimes it is not possible to install them, but it is necessary to restore functionality. First you should check the settings, sometimes the sound does not work after it is turned off. It is also important to pay attention to the signal output to the audio equipment. These activities help to avoid trivial reasons why the sound does not work.

Checking settings

A good place to start would be to go to the Windows 10 settings. Sometimes you just need to turn up the volume. Right-click on the speaker in the lower right corner. A context menu will appear in which you need to select the highlighted item.

A special Windows 10 module will launch, which will try to automatically detect the problem. If the problem was not found and the sound still does not work, then you can move on to the next step.

  • You need to open Playback Devices and click on Speakers twice.

  • After this, you should open the Levels tab and check each slider. After all, if they are turned to 0, then sound cannot come from anywhere.

You can run the Realtek High Definition Audio service for updates to check. To do this you will need:

  • Open the Start menu.
  • Select the Settings tab.
  • Then you need to go to Update and Security.
  • Search for updates.

If something is found, the updates will be immediately installed on the computer.

Connections

Do not forget that the reason why sound does not work in the Windows 10 operating system may be completely trivial: the wire is not connected to the correct socket. The problem can be solved simply by connecting an audio cable alternately to each connector. As soon as the signal is heard, the input will be identified correctly. There may also be a problem with the audio amplifier. Often, users output sound to equipment that itself amplifies it. You need to make sure that the volume level is at a sufficient level for the signal to be heard.

It is worth paying attention to the choice of the input signal into the amplifier itself, and checking the settings.

After this, the fool effect will be eliminated, when the problem is of the nature of ordinary confusion or carelessness.

Installing drivers

It happens that checking updates and connections does not help, and the sound does not work again. In this case, you need to check whether the drivers for the sound card are installed. It is not necessary to download such utilities yourself, as this can be done using automatic programs. For Windows 10, a basic search is provided in this case. In order to contact Windows 10 with this question, you need to:

  • Open the search, which is located next to the Start button.
  • After that, enter Device Manager in the search.
  • Next you should select Sound, game and video devices.
  • We open the lists; if there is nothing in the lists, then we need to update the configuration. If the lists contain items, you must select Update drivers.

After all the actions taken, the sound should return to normal. It's a good idea to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. Since Windows 10 is the newest operating system from Microsoft, after the next update, very strange things can happen in it. There is only one reason - bringing the system to normal operation. Only users can give good feedback about a new axle, so putting it into service unfinished is a great marketing move. Of course, you will have to suffer a little because of this. But this torment accompanied all Windows series.

Windows 10 is a system whose customization is just beginning. Some programs are not even compatible yet. The fact is that Windows 10 is in the process of being finalized, so typical problems arise from time to time. For example, users may experience the following situation when the sound disappears:

  • The sound suddenly disappeared after the next installation of updates or the system itself.
  • The sound suddenly disappeared due to unforeseen reasons.

What's important in this situation? The main thing is not to panic and check the settings. Nothing is impossible, and adjusting the sound is a matter that can be saved. So let’s approach the issue systematically and try to eliminate such a nuisance.

If after reinstallation

This development of events occurs most often: the sound comes and goes, since there are no drivers installed for it. Even if the operating system itself installs drivers on the computer, this does not mean at all that the sound is working. And here you can use two procedures that are specific to each type of device:

The most banal reason

Let’s say everything was working fine, but suddenly, for unknown reasons, the signal from the speakers disappeared. In this case, it may not be Windows 10 that is to blame, but the user himself.

The most important thing is to check that the audio cable is connected correctly. Everyone knows that any computer has several sockets for plugs. Naturally, each manufacturer has its own wiring, so it’s easy to make a mistake about where the audio jack is and where it’s for the microphone. So you should try all the connectors to definitely eliminate one of the typical reasons why the sound signal suddenly disappears. Along the way, you should pay attention to the speakers themselves. It is possible that manufacturers supply them with their own sound controls and switches. Perhaps the speakers are simply turned off or the volume is at its quietest setting. For the sound source, just turn on the player on your computer or phone.

Lost settings

Perhaps the sound settings have been changed so much that everything on the computer is turned down to the minimum volume. To check this option, you need to click on the Windows 10 volume icon. After that, select Playback devices.

Let's look at what device actually works in the computer to reproduce sound. Perhaps an HDMI output and something like that will be installed.

If the setting is set to Speakers, then you need to select them from the list and click on the Properties button. After this, it is better to study each tab for sound levels and effects. Sometimes the settings for this parameter simply do not transmit sound.

It is also important to pay attention to the presence of programs on the computer that are involved in editing and adjusting the signal level. In these applications, the volume control may be set to the lowest setting, preventing audio from being transmitted to the speakers.

device Manager

Another solution to this problem is to launch the Windows 10 Device Manager. To start this application, you can use the Win + R key combination, after which you need to enter devmgmt.msc. Open the special tab Sound, game and video devices, right-click on the name of the sound card and select Properties. Next, look at what is written in the Device Status area.

If after all this there is no message that the device is working normally, then you need to download drivers either from the network or using the DriverGenius application.

It is also possible to resort to standard Windows 10 programs. In this case, Windows Audio helps. This application opens if you go to Control Panel, click on Administrative Tools and select Services. Windows Audio will be in the list of services. You need to check that the Startup Type area is set to Automatic and the service is running.

BIOS

Finally, you need to think about the fact that the sound in Windows 10 may have disappeared due to the integrated sound card being disabled. It can be disabled in the BIOS. You should look in sections such as Integrated Peripherals and Onboard Devices Configuration. Perhaps this is the reason for the lack of sound.

As is clear from all of the above, there is nothing difficult in solving this problem. All you have to do is be patient and try several solutions.

At times, when upgrading to Windows 10 or installing it clean, users encounter problems with the sound system. It malfunctions or stops working completely. It happens that the sound disappears completely, sometimes its volume becomes quieter gradually. In some cases, the headphone output on the front of the computer stops functioning normally. The reason that the sound disappeared after installing Windows 10 may be a combination of several factors. This article is a continuation of how to get rid of it and eliminate the consequences of the failure.

The least effective way is to use the system service for troubleshooting OS audio playback. However, he should also pay attention. To do this, you need to find the speaker shortcut, right-click to open the menu and select “Detect sound problems.” There are no guarantees that it will work, but in this way the most obvious system malfunctions, which involve wear and tear of computer components and their replacement, are eliminated.

The second standard method is to use the device manager. When a malfunction occurs during the next OS update, the user's sound card is selected by right-clicking on the Start menu. Next, right-click to open the menu, find the “Driver” tab and click “Roll Back”. Disabling automatic IT product updates for your sound card can also prevent problems with it in the future.

Negative impact of installing and updating the OS on sound

The cause of the audio playback malfunction is not immediately apparent. Often, when the sound disappears, the speaker shortcut on the taskbar reacts late. It continues to show that everything is normal, the "Device Manager" message remains "The device is working normally", and no OS update is required.

The only hint for an experienced user is the designation of the sound card as “Device supporting High Definition Audio.” This name is a reliable indicator of the lack of necessary IT products. More often, sound chips in Asus and Sony laptops are susceptible to malfunctions. These include Realtek, Conexant SmartAudio HD and VIA HD.

Installing a sound driver in a new OS

There are several effective ways to troubleshoot the problem. The most effective includes the following:

  1. In the “Search” enter the Model_of_your_laptop_support or Model_of_your_motherboard_support. It is better not to look for an IT product on the resource of the chip manufacturer, in particular, Realtek. It is recommended to visit the online platform of the manufacturer of the entire device.
  2. The user support section contains the necessary software for download. IT products for Windows 7 and 8 are compatible with the latest version of the OS. A prerequisite is that the bit depth (x64 or x86) of the driver matches the currently installed system. Information on how to identify them is publicly available.
  3. Next, the drivers are installed.

At first glance, it is simple, but in practice some difficulties arise. Some users report that after completing the procedure, nothing has changed. The reason is that at times the software does not actually load. In this case, the system does not signal a failure. It guides the user through all the steps and completes the procedure, but after looking at the driver properties in Device Manager, the corresponding changes cannot be found.

The described incident is resolved as follows:

The installer runs in compatibility mode with an earlier version of the OS. This measure is the most effective. In particular, Conexant SmartAudio and Via HD are loaded onto a laptop in this way. In this case, this method is applicable, but does not guarantee success.

In more difficult situations, it helps to first remove the sound card (“Sound and game video devices”), as well as components and other software from the “Audio inputs and audio outputs” tab. In Device Manager, right-click the element to select and delete it. Continuing, the installer runs in compatibility mode. When the driver still does not install, in Device Manager, select Action and Update Hardware Configuration. In Realtek, this method works relatively more often.

If you end up installing the previous driver, you should right-click on the sound card, and then click “Update driver” and “Search for drivers on this computer.” Then you need to check whether a new software product compatible with the system has appeared in the list.

If the official IT component was not found, the above algorithm of removing the sound card in the device manager and updating the hardware configuration is still worth applying.

Troubleshooting audio or microphone problems

The method described below is suitable for many laptops, but is especially popular among Asus owners. The reason is that the Via Audio sound chip more often has problems with playback in Windows 10, and with the use of a microphone.

The following measures must be taken:

  1. “Audio inputs and audio outputs” opens. To do this, right-click “Start” and click “Device Manager”.
  2. Each item in the section that opens is deleted, including the driver, when a corresponding proposal is received from the system.
  3. Next, you need to go to the “Sound and game video devices” section and clean it in the same way (HDMI components must be left).
  4. Then the Via Audio driver from Asus is loaded. It can be found on the official resource. The choice is great, since each laptop model offers a corresponding software product, separately for Windows 7 and 8.1.
  5. Next, the driver installer is launched in compatibility mode for the selected OS. This action is performed as an administrator.

It is worth noting that the choice of the previous driver version is not accidental, since VIA 6.0.11.200 is often more efficient than its modern analogues.

Key parameters of playback devices

Most novice users do not attach due importance to the need to thoroughly check the system. Particular attention should be paid to the additional parameters of audio playback devices in the new OS. This is done as follows:

Right-click to select the speaker shortcut located at the very bottom of the notification area. Click "Playback Devices".

You should then ensure that the correct hardware is installed by default. If not, select what you need and click “Use as default.”

If headphones and speakers are installed by default, as expected, you need to right-click them, click “Properties” and go to the “Advanced Features” or “Enhancements” section. It notes "Disable all sound effects."

After completing the described procedure, you need to make sure that the sound is working.

Troubleshooting

It happens that the recording is played back, but very quietly, and the volume is randomly reduced. At the same time, the user does not influence the dynamics of these changes in any way. The sound may begin to crackle and the volume may vary uncontrollably.

For this problem, the following action algorithms:

The "Additional Features" or "Enhancements" checkbox says "Disable all sound effects." Next, you need to apply the settings and then return to the list of playback devices.

After this, the “Communication” tab opens and “No action required” is set. The option to reduce the volume or mute the sound should be removed.

  • Through the “Device Manager”, select the sound card, then “Properties” and “Update driver”,
  • A “non-native” IT product is selected from the list of installed drivers. A prerequisite is compatibility with the OS. The system itself can provide one of them.

It is rare, but it happens that a “non-native” IT product is able to eliminate a malfunction that no longer appears.

In circumstances where the above examples of solving the problem of sound reproduction did not help, it is worth trying one of the currently popular IT products - a driver pack.

Another aspect of the issue is the condition of the microphone, headphones and speakers. It is necessary to check their performance, since they may simply be faulty. Sometimes the problem is not with the Windows 10 operating system, but with them. If a malfunction is detected, you should transfer them to one of the appropriate service centers, which are now in abundance both in megacities and in small towns.
